Between Reality and The Digital World

In our projection mapping performance a dancer interacts with different digital projections on different levels. A social-critical and current story is told. The form and traditional construct of the physical world and virtual reality are questioned. Based on a choreography that is attuned to the digital projections, the dancer has the opportunity to create a very special human-computer interaction on the level of the performing arts. The result is a dynamic, narrative interplay of projection and dance.

As a theme of our performance, we chose "Surveillance". It is shown again and again in current debates on data protection or video surveillance: the concept of the "surveillance state" is becoming increasingly important. With our project we want to sensitize the audience for this topic and call them to deal more with what they voluntarily or involuntarily share with the digital world.

Project Echo - Tara Donovan-Achi

Tara Donovan-Achi

Freshly graduated from the study program New Media at the Merz Academy in Stuttgart with a Bachelor degree, with a deep interest in Surviellance Art. A master's degree in lighting design is the next goal.

For me, Project Echo means having the ability to educate viewers about surveillance and its potential consequences - to artistically promote a food for thought that encourages one to reflect more about one's blindness. The fact that I have some experience in the dance field has given me great pleasure in developing myself further with this project in this direction as well as in the field of light and projections.

My interests are mainly in the field of interactive media, in which the user is actively involved in different events. I'm very enthusiastic about web and app development, virtual reality, working in the 3D area and creating all kinds of visualizations, for example, projections in real space.

For me, "Project Echo" shows how autonomous action in a surveillance society, which is already part of the digital world today, is weakened in the long term. In addition to educating the viewer on the potential consequences of surveillance, it was a particular incentive for me to show how digital borders can be expanded in the physical space and how interactions can arise that would not be possible without the special synergy of these two worlds.

Music

Sebastian Bach

Sebastian Bach made an important contribution to the overall artistic picture of our project. Sebastian is a composer and trained film musician and has enriched us immensely with his musical talent. He devotes his life to composing music for film, advertising and other interesting projects. Sebastian studied at ArtEZ University in the Netherlands and is now working as a freelance composer. He has produced a fascinating track for us in a short time, which excellently underlines the emotions and values of our project that we want to convey.

Dance

Martha Mirtsou

As a versatile dancer and protagonist Martha Mirtsou has greatly enriched our project. Martha is a graduate dancer, choreographer and dance educator who graduated from the New York City Dance School in Stuttgart. Whether jazz, ballet, hip hop or contemporary, Martha knows her way around in every possible area of dance and works with passion and diligence on each of her projects. The flowing and poignant movements that Martha presents in our project tell a very special story - a story that would not have been possible without the language of dance.

Story

Project Echo - Scores

Rating-System

The story we want to convey is about a surveillance state in the near future, in which a control system called "echo" rules over society. Citizens of the society are continuously monitored, whether in sports activities, shopping in the supermarket, while driving by public or private transport, the afternoon walk through the park or other everyday activities. The citizens are observed and assigned a score for each action. This score has far-reaching impacts on future events. For example, it determines things that individuals are allowed or denied, whether they are looking for a new home or applying for a new job. Even the smallest mistake can become an existential problem.

Blacklist

Various people are registrated on the blacklist every day, a list that documents all those who have received many negative scores. Once you have been hit by the "blacklist", it will be nearly impossible to delete it. By listing the name on the "blacklist" things are made difficult or even completely denied to the corresponding person in everyday life.

Digital Shadow

An impressive phenomenon of the surveillance society is the emergence of the "data shadow". This manifests itself as an electronic image of the self, which is increasingly able to lead a real life of its own. The digital shadow is not controllable and plays a crucial role in the perception of our person. It takes a higher priority than our real "me". In our key scene, the data shadow separates from the dancer and turns against her. It becomes independent and can no longer be controlled. Finally, the protagonist faces powerlessly a shadow world in which she has no influence as a real person.
